The people of Ludlow may love their food but they also have a high regard for keeping fit and to prove it, the Ludlow Challenge takes place on Saturday 17th July where the fit and healthy can tackle either 15 or 25 miles of undulating Shropshire and Herefordshire countryside and then be rewarded by....... yes food! On this occasion, there will be no requirement for the Clive's award winning AA 2 rosette restaurant but there could undoubtedly be a need for luxury hotel bed & breakfast accommodation for the night.

William Shakespeare's famous play of love turned bad by unfounded jealousy is playing to packed audiences at Ludlow Castle as part of Ludlow Festival. The town has been bursting at the seams with so many enthusiastic visitors who have travelled from far and wide to be part of this very successful annual event.  Needless to say, the Clive's award winning AA 2 rosette restaurant has also been extremely busy as its reputation spreads with its luxury bed & breakfast accommodation also being snapped up.

One day a year since 1989, Ludlow has opened up many of the town's most stunning and interesting private gardens for viewing by green-fingered enthusiasts.  Hidden away behind the high walls of the historic town centre are some breathtaking horticultural displays bursting into a riot of summer scents and colours.

Each year, different parts of the town are showcased and this year among the eleven gardens open, are 3 of those first to take part 21 years ago.  This is a wonderful opportunity to wander around the town and take a good look at a marvelous variety of private gardens and find inspiration from the way their owners make the most of different shapes and sizes.  As well as enjoying a unique garden spectacular on Sunday 20th June, you can also enjoy afternoon tea, cool down with ice creams and snap up some of the plants for sale.   If you are a fan of gardening  (or just like a nose around!) don't miss out.

Sat 29 May 2010
Ludlow's recorded history begins in 1086, not long after the arrival of William the Conqueror, when Ludlow Castle was built as one of a line of castles along the Marches to keep out the Welsh.  A town was planned at the castle gate soon afterwards and in the late 12th and early 13th centuries, the castle was extended and then town walls were built.  Before 1138, Ludlow was known as 'Lodelowe' and as the River Teme had rapids, was called 'a place on the hill by a loud river'.   The original medieval street layout survives to this day and Ludlow has character to match its history.  Of the many half-timbered buildings, the Feathers is the most striking - a rare example of Jacobean architecture.  Other buildings of note include the former grammar school founded in 1282 and St Laurence's Parish Church, one of the largest in the country with parts dating back to pre-15th century.

With this fantastic history on offer, you will undoubtedly come to the conclusion that Ludlow is well worth a visit and so too is the Clive's AA 2 rosette award winning restaurant.  The Clive's evening and lunch menus change seasonally and all food is locally sourced to create a mix of traditional and contemporary cooking. The Clive Restaurant can be found in the Good Food Guide and is Michelin listed.

In addition to serving exquisite food in the restaurant, the Clive has 15 luxury ensuite hotel bedrooms which can be booked on line or by telephoning 01584 856565.

We have just received the programme for the Ludlow Festival which takes place between 26th June and 11th July.  This year, the Shakespeare play will be Othello, directed by Ben Crocker.  The programme for the festival looks really good with the brilliant Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain returning  and also an Audience with Melvyn Bragg.

With Ludlow's reputation for excellent food, it is essential that you dine at one of the best restaurants in the area.  The Clive comes highly recommended and has been awarded 2AA rosettes and is Michelin listed.

Accommodation in Ludlow will be very much in demand during the Ludlow Festival so we do recommend that you waste no time in booking luxury bed & breakfast accommodation.  So contact The Clive on 01584 856565 to secure a reservation.  Then after a good night's sleep, tuck into a delicious breakfast.

Sat 10 Apr 2010
The Clive has two new artists exhibiting from this month.

Emma Belton has studied printing and printmaking at the City Lit, London and Warwickshire College. Having grown up and lived in South Shropshire, her exhibition is a collection of her recent watercolour and mixed media work that aims to capture the wonderful experience of being in the Shropshire landscapes.  She is particularly interested in using colour to evoke moments when the light falls on an area to make it appear a brilliant hue.  She is also interested in building up layers and textures in a painting to capture the feeling of being in a place.

Emma is exhibiting at the Clive until the 2nd July.

Nicola Haigh
trained in fashion/textiles but has spent most of her career using watercolour and acrylics with a passion for silk batik.  Her recent work is primarily based on nature, particularly water.  She is fascinated by the way ripples in water change the reflections and how light manipulates the colour and appearance of the surface.  She uses photography to capture a moment and creates her work using combinations of acrylic, oil, batik, fused fabrics and embroidery.  Nicola teaches watercolours, silk painting and batik.

Nicola is exhibiting at The Clive until the 9th July

Of course the best way to view the artists work is to dine in the Clive's award winning AA 2 rosette restaurant and if you need quality bed and breakfast accommodation , we suggest you book a luxury hotel bedroom at the Clive.

Sat 3 Apr 2010
On the weekend of 8th/9th May, the second Ludlow Spring Food Festival will be held in Ludlow Castle.  Last year was the first time this event had been staged and it proved to be so successful that there was no hesitation in deciding that it should become an annual event.  The spring festival centers on beer, bangers and bread with a 'Meet the Brewer' opportunity on the Friday evening.  There will be 130 real ales on draught from small breweries in Wales and the Marches with seriously good sausages and bread.   In addition, there will be a display of classic cars also taking place on the Sunday.  Sounds like a fantastic weekend for all lovers of beer and sausages (and that is not just the guys!).

If you still need  to book bed and breakfast accommodation in the Ludlow area, you will  need to be quick if you want a luxury en suite hotel bedroom at The Clive.  In addition, the reputation of the Clive's award winning AA 2 rosette restaurant is spreading which means we are extremely busy so we do recommend that you book soon.

Our current artists in residence at the Clive are
Nick Raybould and Rachel Hatfield

Nick studied at Leamington Spa and Derbyshire where a wild rule breaking punk attitude was encouraged. This has seeped through into his paintings today.  Inspiration may have come from a lot of areas such as music, nature and the results have evolved like a journey. While he may start out with a mental picture of what he wants, his work never follows those pre-determined ideas, instead growing with each new colour mixed and applied.

Rachel's exhibition is based on local landscapes. She has been influenced by David Hockney since her degree at Exeter Art College and enjoys working across multiple canvasses.  Colour is very important in her work and she uses it to enhance the natural features and forms she sees in the landscape.  When composing a painting, she likes to use roads and hedge lines to draw the viewer in or divide the image.  She likes to think of her work as being simple, bold and bright.

The best way to view these artists' paintings is to dine on delicious food in the Clive's award winning AA 2 rosettes and Michelin listed restaurant.  And if you need to look longer and harder, we suggest that  you take advantage of bed and breakfast accommodation in Ludlow and in particular The Clive's luxury hotel en suite bedrooms.

Sat 27 Feb 2010
An exhibition featuring the work of Peter Blake, one of the leading British pop artists of the 1960s, is currently taking place at the Assembly Rooms in Ludlow.  Alphabet features a set of bold and colourful silkscreen prints, one for each letter of the alphabet.  Peter Blake is probably best known for his now iconic cover design for the Beatles Sergeant Pepper album.

The exhibition runs until Sunday 14th March and as that date should resound in everyone's memory as Mothering Sunday, may we suggest that you take the opportunity to reserve a table in the Clive's award winning AA 2 rosette restaurant.  And if you really want to spoil the most important lady in your family, you could also reserve quality bed and breakfast accommodation at the Clive where she will be able to relax in a luxury hotel bedroom.

Sat 20 Feb 2010
February is often a season of glowing mists and vivid sunsets in Shropshire, a time when you notice the days getting longer and the first spring flowers beginning to emerge.  High up in the Shropshire Hills, close to the Welsh border, is Stapeley Hill, some 1,000 feet above sea level where lies the remains of a once great Neolithic stone circle - Mitchell's Fold.  There is a legend attached to Mitchell's Fold stone circle involving an evil witch, who milked a magical cow dry and as punishment she was turned into stone.  The locals then built a ring of stones around her to prevent her from escaping.  Legend has it that the large stone remaining today is the petrified body of the witch.

To experience the sunsets and spring flowers, the mists and mysteries that Shropshire has to offer, we recommend that you book bed and breakfast accommodation in Ludlow and take advantage of the Clive's 3 nights for the price of 2 offer in luxury hotel accommodation.  And at the end of a fabulous day, you can relax by a roaring fire in the Clive Bar before moving on to our award winning AA 2 rosette restaurant.  Sounds like the perfect break.

We had the most amazing response to our Xmas menu promotion with a record number of people dining in the Clive Restaurant during the month of December.  We were so pleased to find that we had judged the market correctly, offering competitive menus but without compromising on the excellent quality of food.

Following the success of the TV series ‘Victorian Farm’, three more 60 minute programmes looking at the lives of 19th century farmers are currently being broadcast on BBC2 for Christmas 2009.  Filmed just along the A49 from Ludlow, in and around the Acton Scott Estate, the three ‘Victorian Farm’ experts discover in depth how the Victorians created the celebration of Christmas as we know it today.

We have yet to see what kind of a Christmas meal is prepared at the ‘Victorian Farm’ but it seems that in the more wealthy homes, Victorian families dined sumptuously on raw oysters, fried smelts with sauce tartare, sweetbread pates followed by roast turkey with cranberry sauce, potatoes a la maitre d’hotel, rice croquettes and peas, washed down with a glass or two of Roman punch.  This would then be followed by Nesselrode pudding, crackers and cheese with Parisian salad, fruit, macaroons and coffee…..Phew!

At the Clive in Ludlow, we would not be able to produce a meal quite like the Victorians were accustomed to but we can offer you good food befitting an award winning AA 2 rosette restaurant.  And if you would like to complete the occasion with quality bed and breakfast accommodation, you could also reserve a luxury hotel en suite bedroom to collapse into at the end of a wonderful evening.  Sounds like a great idea!

Ludlow Castle was the most important castle in the Marches of Wales and was the stronghold of the Earls of March.  The ruin sits on a rocky outcrop overlooking the river Teme and consists of a rectangular outer bailey, built in the latter half of the twelfth century and an oval inner bailey entered through a strong gatehouse called the Great Tower.  The chapel is a Norman structure that resembles the Temple Church in London but all that remains of this building is the west door and circular nave.  To discover the full history of Ludlow Castle, join one of the tours currently taking place on Wednesdays and Thursdays.  After your educational tour of Ludlow Castle, step back into the twenty first century by dining in the Clive's Michelin listed and award winning AA 2 rosette restaurant.  And if you need bed and breakfast accommodation, you could not do better than to reserve a luxury en suite hotel room at The Clive in Ludlow.

We had a lovely surprise when we opened our copy of The Times yesterday.   In the Bricks & Mortar section of the newspaper, there was an article on a Grade II listed Victorian house for sale in nearby Onibury.  In the Fast Facts section at the end of the article under Where to Eat were the words "Head for The Clive in Ludlow."  What a great recommendation to receive!

However, when you are in Ludlow, you don't need an excuse to dine in the Clive's AA 2 rosette award winning restaurant.  Or if you are hunting for a new home in Shropshire and need bed and breakfast for the night, we could not recommend a better place to stay than in the much sought after luxury en suite hotel bedrooms of The Clive in Ludlow.

Ludlow is in the middle of the Shropshire Triangle!
Two hundred years ago, Charles Darwin was born in Shrewsbury and the same year, William Penny-Brookes was born in Much Wenlock.  Brookes' lifelong efforts to revive the Olympian Ideal resulted in the first Olympics of modern times being held in 1896.  And just a mere one hundred years earlier, Ironbridge became the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution and is now a World Heritage Site.

Without doubt, the best B & B in Ludlow where you will find quality hotel accommodation is The Clive, right in the middle of the Shropshire Triangle.  A stay at the Clive would also give you the opportunity to sample the excellent food served in our award winning AA 2 rosette restaurant Do not delay, book today.

Ludlow is proud of its heritage and is definitely holding its position as the centre for food and drink in Britain.

When the restaurant Hibiscus moved away from Ludlow, unfortunately, the Michelin star went too.  However, the restaurant was taken over by the renowned chef, Alan Murchison, as a sister restaurant to L'Ortolan in Reading with Will Holland as Head Chef.  The excellent news earlier this year was that the new restaurant, La Becasse, has been awarded a Michelin star after just over a year which we were all delighted to hear.  This proves beyond doubt that if you are planning a gastronomic trip, Ludlow is the place to visit.

May we suggest that you take advantage of the Clive's excellent value 3 nights bed & breakfast for the price of 2 offer so that you can relax in our outstanding en suite hotel bedrooms in Ludlow.  And with entries in the Michelin Guide, Good Food Guide and of course our two AA Rosettes, a meal in our restaurant is a must.

If you are too young to have experienced a journey on a steam train, it is not too late to find out what you have been missing.  Next weekend, the Festival of Steam takes place on the Severn Valley Railway which is only a short distance from Ludlow.

A section of the line was extensively damaged in the July 2007 floods but last summer, HRH Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall visited the railway after it was fully re-opened.

Unfortunately, HRH was not able to drop into the Clive while in the area but if you decide to board a steam train for a memorable journey through our glorious countryside you should also consider the possibility of a bed & breakfast stay in Ludlow in The Clive's hotel accommodation or dine in our award winning restaurant.

If you are looking for somewhere to take the children during the Easter break and want to escape from the kitchen sink and garden to a hotel, why not spend a few nights here at The Clive and take full advantage of a day on the farm instead.

The BBC2 series Victorian Farm is an historical observational documentary which follows a team of people who become Victorian farmers and spend a year working on a late 19th century style farm.  The series explores the extent to which the traditional crafts and skills of ordinary people in the Victorian era have been forgotten.  Filming took place at Acton Scott Historic Working Farm which is only a short distance from Ludlow.
